Traditional boat racing festival – a distinctive feature of Phan Thiet's coastal culture.
Hundreds of years ago, in the villages of Nam Nghia, Thuy Tu, Nam Hai, Duc Long, and Phu Trinh, during the commemoration of the death anniversary of the fishing ancestors, the fishermen would celebrate the start of their fishing season by organizing their crews to wear uniforms, paddle, and sing while rowing. Gradually, this ritual, combined with the rhythmic rowing, beautiful display, and melodious singing, gave rise to the Boat Racing Festival that exists today. According to folk belief, the leading boat in these races is believed to bring good fortune to the local fishermen that year. Therefore, before the festival, the racing teams prepare meticulously and are determined to win, alongside a spirit of friendly competition and learning.
Traditional boat racing is a vibrant sport deeply rooted in national cultural identity, showcasing the spirit of unity and strength, and is loved by people of all ages and tourists alike, who come to watch and cheer. Therefore, besides the diligent training of the athletes, one of the key factors in the success of any competition is the enthusiastic support of the audience. In the early spring sunshine, the number of spectators increased steadily, especially along both banks of the river. On the shore, the scene was one of enthusiastic cheering, while on the river, the racing boats seemed to strain their muscles as they glided across the clear blue water. All of this created a lively and bustling atmosphere, imbued with the spirit of spring.
